Malaysia-Korea Nuclear Energy Seminar 2024
Malaysia-Korea Nuclear Energy Seminar 2024:
Knowledge Exchange to Drive Sustainable, Low-Carbon Solutions for Energy Transition
Kuala Lumpur, 5 November 2024 – Today, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Malaysia and the Malaysia Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (MYCentre4IR) co-organised The Malaysia-Korea Nuclear Energy Seminar 2024.
The seminar aims to be a platform for the exchange of knowledge, insights and experiences in the field of nuclear energy between the two countries. It brings together industry experts, academic leaders and government officials to explore the potential of nuclear energy as a key component of clean energy transitions, addressing the technological advancements, policy frameworks, safety standards, and economic considerations.
The keynote address was delivered by Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Haji Mad Zaidi Bin Mohd Karli, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), who outlined Malaysia’s vision for the future role of nuclear energy in its energy transition. He stated, “As Malaysia pursues its ambitious target for a net-zero future as early as 2050, we recognise the importance of adopting diverse and forward-thinking solutions that align with both economic growth and environmental responsibility. Malaysia is currently exploring all available pathways, including new technologies such as carbon capture storage, hydrogen and also nuclear energy technology, which has the potential to deliver reliable, low-carbon power to support a cleaner energy future.”
H.E. Yeo Seung-bae, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Malaysia, gave the opening remarks, setting the stage for timely discussions on the international collaboration in the nuclear energy sector.” “I hope that today’s seminar will signal a renewed start in Korea-Malaysia nuclear cooperation, contributing to Malaysia’s efforts to diversify energy mix. Based on the strategic trust we’ve built over the past 65 years, Korea is committed to working closely with Malaysia across the entire nuclear ecosystem” said H.E. Yeo Seung-bae.
The seminar featured presentations by the invited speakers, panel discussion and MOU exchange ceremony. The programme highlights included:
- Global Nuclear Energy Landscape: Presentation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on nuclear energy trends and sustainability pathways.
- A Collaborative Framework for Accelerating Advanced Nuclear and SMR Deployment: Insights from the World Economic Forum (WEF) on the role of international partnerships in speeding up the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies and SMRs in global energy systems.
- Malaysia’s Nuclear Future: Presentation by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) on the current landscape and future plans for nuclear energy development in Malaysia.
- Korea’s Nuclear Power Development: Presentation by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) on Korea’s advancements in nuclear power and its focus on technological progress and public engagement.
- Innovations and Capacity Building: Sessions on safe and sustainable nuclear waste management, regulatory modernisation, and manpower training by Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD), Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC), Doosan Enerbility, and other key stakeholders.
- Panel Discussion: With contributions from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Doosan Enerbility and KHNP, the session focuses on Nuclear Supply Chain Readiness and Capacity Building.
- Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Exchange Ceremony: Collaboration between Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) and KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS) under this MOU focuses on research cooperation and student mobility programmes aimed at advancing nuclear knowledge and skills development.
Ellina Roslan, Senior Director of MyDIGITAL Corporation (the host agency for MYCentre4IR), stated, “The Malaysia-Korea Nuclear Energy Seminar serves as a crucial platform for the exchange of knowledge and experiences on nuclear energy solutions. Nuclear energy enables diversification of energy sources and offers a solution to power the growing demand from sectors such as data centres for AI development and quantum computing with high energy consumption and require green energy to support Malaysia’s digital economy and low-carbon future.”
The Malaysia-Korea Nuclear Energy Seminar 2024 provided the participants with a holistic view of the nuclear energy ecosystem value chain. Insights and knowledge acquired from the seminar provide participants with key critical areas of focus when considering the deployment to this new source of energy.
